Sony still investigating PSN/Qriocity hack

Sony is still not able to tell its users when the PlayStaion network and Qriocity services will be back online, according to Patrick Seybold, senior director, corporate communications social media, on his PS blog on Monday, April 25.

On Wednesday, April 20, Sony had turned off the PlayStation services to investigate a hack of the online services. “We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly,” Seybold wrote on Friday, April 22. “We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.”

The PlayStation Network connects gamers who use a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable system. The Sony Qriocity service, which is used to stream audio and video to Sony devices, was also compromised in the attack.

On Saturday Sony said “We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.”

Speaking to Digizone, he said that by doing so the number of its paying customers currently receiving HD channels – a figure that he put at 10% – is likely to grow significantly.

Consumers around the globe are replacing both their flat panel and CRT TVs at a much faster rate than the previous 10-15 year average for CRT-to-CRT replacement, according to US research firm DisplaySearch.

“Digital broadcast transitions and more affordable flat panel TVs have caused consumers to replace their TVs, especially CRT models, in record numbers. By looking at how the pace of replacement is changing and what the drivers of replacement are, we can start to understand how future consumption might look,” said Paul Gagnon, DisplaySearch director of North America TV market research, in a statement.

In January 2011, Russian company General Satellite’s representatives visited Pakistan for the second time in the scope of preparation of a joint launch of the first satellite DTH (Direct to Home) platform in Pakistan.
Managers of the Foreign Broadcasting Projects Department were received by the Minister of Information and Broadcasting of Pakistan and chiefs of many state and private companies which would like to become co-investors of the project. The negotiations lasted successfully although the details are not to be published yet. But it certainly was a sufficient step forward.

Vivendi hasn’t reopened Lagardère Canal+ talks

French telco Vivendi has not reopened talks to buy rival Lagardère’s 20 per cent stake in pay-TV unit Canal Plus, Vivendi chief Jean-Bernard Levy has told French newspaper Le Figaro.

Vivendi, which owns 80 per cent of Canal Plus, failed in a previous attempt to buy the stake from Lagardère, which opted instead for a stock-market listing. The IPO has been delayed since the Japan earthquake disaster hit markets in March.

“We have not reopened negotiations with Lagardère,” Levy told Le Figaro.

Vivendi’s CEO is moving to take full control of some units in a bid to reduce the group’s conglomerate share-price discount. The recent acquisition of Vodafone’s stake in telecoms brand SFR will give Vivendi €2 billion in extra profits over four years.

“With 100 per cent of SFR, we have better access to its cash, and moreover a strong increase in Vivendi’s profit,” he said

DirecTV revealed April 19 that it would launch Home Premiere on April 21 with the Sony Pictures .... Just Go With It. DirecTV’s HD-DVR customers can rent the title for $29.99 for 48 hours. Home Premiere ... are made available on VoD about 60 days after their theatrical release, roughly half the normal VoD window of four months. Each Home Premiere .... will be available for some two weeks.

EchoStar: ‘Win some, lose some’

EchoStar and sister company Dish Network on April 20 lost the latest round of its long-running litigation with DVR-technology company TiVo. The US Court of Appeals said that EchoStar continued to infringe TiVo’s patents, and found the company in contempt. TiVo’s stock price rocketed by more than 32 per cent, and most analysts agree that the end of the legal battle – which started in 2004 – could now be in sight.

The consensus is that EchoStar’s Dish Network will end up paying damages to TiVo and licensing their technology. “Faced with an imminent shut-down of millions of DVRs, we believe Dish will be faced with a gun-to-the-head settlement,” said Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett in a research note. Moffett suggested that shutting down and replacing older EchoStar set-top boxes could cost the broadcaster $3 billion.

Tricolor TV quashes rumours

The leading Russian DTH platform Tricolor TV will continue to be distributed in Siberia by the Bonum-1 satellite at 56 degrees East until at least late 2013.

The news was given in a statement by the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) and confirmed by Tricolor TV, thereby quashing rumours of an upcoming suspension of the service in Siberia.

DISH seeks review on latest TiVo decision

DISH Network says it will seek a review of a US Appeal Court decision ordering it to disable part of the functionality on its DVR products. The appeal court upheld a ruling against former parent EchoStar that it had infringed patents held by digital recording specialist TiVo.

In a statement DISH said its customers would not be immediately impacted by the developments in the eight-year old legal battle. The company is seeking a stay of execution ahead of its review of the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals’ 7-5 split decision.
